Japanese Name: Kibara-mushikui

English Name : Tickell's Leaf Warbler
Scientific Name : Phylloscopus affinis

Tickell's Leaf Warbler is very rare in Japan. To my knowledge, this species has only 3 confirmed records and an additional unconfirmed sighting of this species in Japan. All birds were so far observed in Hegura Island, off Wajima, Ishikawa prefecture in late May.

1. 19th May 1995
Wajima-shi, Ishikawa Prefecture

The long supercilium is bright yellow in front of the eye and paler behind.
Since the supercilium is dark and pronounced, the facial impression of this species is a little similar to that of Radde's Warbler.
The underparts are yellow. The undertail coverts look slightly whitish on this photo, but they looked more yellowish in the field.. Note the short primary projection (a little shorter than the half length of the tertials). Call is "chun", similar to the call of the tree sparrow.
2. 28th May 1993
Wajima-shi, Ishikawa Prefecture

I took this picture in 1993, two years earlier than images No. 1 and 3.
This bird's song sounded as a loud "chui, chui, chui...".
Note the yellow supercilium, the lack of dark area on yellowish lower
mandible, and the thin legs.
3. 18th May 1995
Wajima-shi, Ishikawa Prefecture

Possibly the same bird as in image No.1.
The bird has no wing bars. Upperparts are olive brown.

When I walked among the pines on the island, I noticed the call which was
similar to what I had heard two years before. The familiar call helped me
discover this bird. But my information was distrusted by many birders that
day. The next day, possibly the same bird was re-discovered, and many
birders could have a look....
