And also note its rather straight profile form mantole to tail. These characters are Hippolais's identification point.

Booted Warbler is the smallest of Hippolais.
Sykes's Warbler(H. rama)and Olivaceous Warbler(H. pallida)are often confused with this species.
We distinguished it from Sykes's and Oliveceous Warbler by :
1 shorter bill,
2 dark spot near the tip of lower mandible,
3 longer supercilium extended well behind eye,
4 the contrast between pale fringe and dark center on the tertials.
This bird's head often looked more roundish than these photos. Its character may be also identification point.
Some Phyllosopus and Paddyfield Warbler(Accrocephalus agricola)can also confused with Booted Warbler.
Note pale-edged outer tail-feathers and square-ended tail. All Phylloscopus warblers recorded in Japan have no pale-edged outer tail-feathers.
3. 28 Sep. 1999
Wajima-shi, Ishikawa Prefecture

Note short primary projection.
This individuals's legs are grayish. But normal Booted seems to have more pinkish legs.
This bird was very active, and did also hovering and flying catch. It sometimes flew up vertically about 2 meters and cought insects. And it perched once on an electric wire.
Hippolais warblers have never recorded officially in Japan. But Icterine Warbler was once obsaerved on Hegura-jiima Island.
As Japan is long distance from Hippolais's distribution area, so the records would't increase in future.
In Eastern Asia, Syke's Warbler was recorded twice in Hong Kong.. And recently, Sykes's or Booted Warbler seems to be observed in Korea.
